California BTW training

Complete the California training record before CDL issuance.

Understand the state 15-hour training requirement for original Class A/B applicants, DL 1236 certification, ELDT overlap and skills-test preparation.

At least 15 hours

California residents applying for an original commercial Class A or B license must complete at least 15 hours of behind-the-wheel training and submit DL 1236 before issuance.

Do not confuse state hours with federal ELDT

Federal ELDT behind-the-wheel training is based on demonstrated proficiency. California separately requires the 15-hour certification for original Class A or B applicants.

Train in the intended configuration

Use the transmission, brake system, combination, passenger vehicle, and other equipment needed for the desired license without avoidable restrictions.
