ELDT applies to specified first-time credentials.
It generally applies to a first Class A or Class B CDL, a Class B-to-A upgrade, or the first School Bus, Passenger, or Hazardous Materials endorsement.
Provider must appear in the Training Provider Registry
Only a provider listed in the FMCSA registry can provide training that satisfies the federal ELDT rule.
Theory and behind-the-wheel are measured differently
Theory training requires the provider's passing standard. Federal behind-the-wheel training is proficiency-based rather than based on one nationwide minimum number of hours.
California adds its own 15-hour requirement
Original California Class A or B applicants must also document at least 15 hours of behind-the-wheel commercial training through the DL 1236 process.
