CLP process

Obtain the permit that matches the intended skills test.

Prepare the California license, documents, medical status, $100 Class A/B fee, vision and knowledge tests, CLP endorsements, validity and supervised practice.

CLP validity

The permit is valid for up to 180 days and can be renewed for one additional 180-day period when the expiration remains within one year of the original application date.

Before the office visit

Hold a valid California driver license, complete the application, gather identity and residency documents, address medical certification, and prepare the knowledge tests for the class and endorsements.

At DMV

Pay the nonrefundable fee, complete thumbprint and photo, pass the vision test, and pass the required knowledge tests.

CLP endorsements are limited

A CLP can carry Tank, Passenger, and School Bus endorsements under the applicable restrictions. Hazmat and doubles/triples are not CLP driving endorsements.

Practice with proper supervision

The supervising driver must hold the appropriate CDL and endorsements for the vehicle and sit in a position able to provide instruction.
