Typical Class A knowledge route
General Knowledge is required. Air Brakes applies when the test vehicle uses air brakes. Combination Vehicles applies to Class A combination operation. Add endorsement tests for tank, doubles/triples, passenger, school bus, or hazardous materials as needed.
Training sequence
First-time Class A applicants subject to ELDT complete theory and behind-the-wheel curricula through a registered provider. California also requires at least 15 hours of behind-the-wheel training for an original Class A or B license.
Avoid preventable restrictions
Testing in an automatic, a vehicle without full air brakes, or a non-tractor-trailer Class A combination can limit future work.
